SEO, AIO and GEO: What Your Business Needs

Understand the terms, the shared foundations and what to measure.

SEO improves a website's visibility in search engines. AIO is a broad industry label for preparing business information for AI systems. GEO focuses on visibility and citations in generated answers. These goals share useful foundations: crawlable pages, accurate business details, helpful content and credible evidence. None gives an agency control over another platform's recommendations.

Google's AI features use the SEO foundations

Google says the normal SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require additional special optimizations to appear in those features. Pages must still be eligible for Search and useful to the person asking the question.

Structured data should describe visible content accurately. Clear answers and public project evidence help a reader assess the business, but a schema label or an llms.txt file should not be sold as a guaranteed route to a citation.

Search crawling and model training are different

OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler and GPTBot as a crawler for model training. Its documentation says those robots.txt settings are independent. Allowing training is therefore a different decision from allowing retrieval for search.

Other platforms publish their own crawler rules. A practical audit checks the relevant crawler, the site's robots rules, HTTP responses and any hosting or firewall restrictions. A robots rule cannot demonstrate that an edge security service allows the request.

Give answers a source worth citing

State what you do, where you work and the question each page answers. Use a real example when it explains the decision. Link to the primary source for platform policies and distinguish a delivered project from a claimed revenue or ranking result.

For a local business, practical service details are more useful than generic AI terminology. Pricing scope, ownership, delivery, customer fit and substantiated client work help both a prospective customer and a retrieval system understand the offer.

Measure each surface separately

Use Search Console for Google queries and pages, analytics for visits and completed inquiries, and sales records for qualified opportunities. Check local Maps visibility from relevant locations because distance affects Google's local results.

For AI visibility, repeat a defined set of buyer questions across the engines you care about. Save the date, prompt, answer, whether the brand was mentioned and the URL actually cited. Treat those samples as observations rather than a stable rank or proof that every user receives the same answer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google require special GEO markup?

Google says no additional special optimizations are necessary for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Follow its SEO and content guidance, make important pages indexable, and keep any structured data consistent with visible content.

Does an llms.txt file guarantee AI citations?

No. It can provide a readable site summary and links, but it is not a guarantee of retrieval, ranking or citation. The underlying pages and evidence still need to be useful and accessible.
